David Glen Petrescue was a devoted husband who cherished his wife Brenda through 31 years of marriage. He was a godly father and role model who led his three children, Janelle, Tim, and Michelle, with joy, patience and great wisdom.
It brought him great honor to be called the son of Con and Marianne Petrescue, and he walked faithfully as a brother to Bernie and his wife Winn, his sister Karen and her husband Doug, and his youngest sister Michelle and her husband Murray. He was as well, a trusted son-in-law to Norm and Donna Smith, and a dear brother-in-law to Barbara and Dennis. In addition, there are twelve who affectionately call him “Uncle Dave”. However..........
To most of us he was “Pastor Dave” the one who weekly spoke the Word of God into our lives and daily lived it with gusto and joy. Dave was an artist who used words as his medium. He often marked special occasions with an original poem, composed and sang his songs to celebrate his children's graduations and routinely entertained the masses with his puns and ever present alliteration. (“Puns,” he insisted, “were the highest form of humor!”) But his greatest works are displayed in the lives of those he led, those who grasped the immense love of God and its penetrating impact on the canvas of human life. These masterpieces will live on into eternity!
Dave's journey began in Regina , Saskatchewan on June 7, 1953. It was as a teen that he had a radical encounter with Christ and committed his life to the Lord. Following high school in 1972, Dave worked in his father's business for a time and then embarked on an around the world adventure in which he sorted out many of the details of his future, including who he would marry, and his calling into ministry. Dave returned home and enrolled at Canadian Bible College and two years later married his long time friend Brenda Smith on July 5, 1975. He then completed his degree in Religious Education and a year later another degree in Theology. After graduation, Brenda and Dave spent nine months visiting and serving missionaries around the world and confirming their call into ministry. In 1978, soon after their return back to Canada , Dave accepted his first pastorate at Unionville Alliance church in Toronto where they remained for 13 years. Dave presided over a phenomenal period of growth in that church, enjoying the continual confirmation of his spiritual gifts in preaching and pastoring.
In 1991, Dave and Brenda felt that God was calling their young family out into the deeper waters of living by faith, so they tendered their resignation to the church and began a cross country trek, uncertain of the details of their future but very certain of God's faithfulness. His faithfulness of course led them to Cairo , Egypt and Maadi Community Church where we have been blessed for the past 14 years to worship under Dave's leadership.
Dave will be remembered as an eternal optimist, seeing the best in every person and situation, as well as an encourager, possessing the powerful ability to honestly express the depths of his emotions, whether through bursts of excitement, heart-felt tears, an intoxicating smile, or his token two thumbs up. Many adjectives will be ascribed to Dave, but of all “passionate” will best summarize the life he lived. Passionate about his family, passionate about life, passionate about Christ and the advance of His kingdom!
